Catskills Lean-To Crew

This worktrip will hopefully be rescheduled for later in April. If you are seeing this event page and are interested in helping out, please email Crew Leader Eric Friedman at [email protected] with interest in volunteering.

Terrace Mountain Worktrip 4/12/24
Friday, April 12th, 2024 - 10am-5pm

NY-NJ Trail Conference Catskills Lean-to Crew Leader, Eric Friedman will be leading our first 2024 work trip to the Terrace Mountain Lean-to. We will finish the "stone patio” which was started in Spring 2023. This new shelter was constructed in 2021 and received the finishing touches by the Crew last year, which included, a rebuilt privy, oakum, saplings and staining as well as, general site improvements.

Our tasks: relatively light, and may allow for day hikes and exploring:

- Bringing tools in and out
- Stonework in front of the shelter to minimize mud.
- Rebuild the fire pit

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 12th - 14th This should be before the black flies!
You can either come for the day or stay at the shelter to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience! Eric plans to spend Friday and Saturday nights.
Those coming early on Friday, Saturday or Sunday are encouraged to meet at 9am. The meeting time may be adjusted due to volunteer circumstances. Those coming later will check for written notes, concerning what to carry in from Eric’s car or truck and will hike in on their own.

Where to meet:
At the Trailhead Parking for Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail. The trailhead is on Woodland Valley Road, off NYS Route 28 a few miles west of Phoenicia, right across the street from the Woodland Valley Campground. There is no cell service at the trailhead or on the mountain. The last cell service from the south is in Boiceville.

What to bring:
Lunch and snacks, sturdy shoes, water, safety glasses, gloves, bug dope, and a headlight for the hike out. If you’ll be spending the night, bring your necessary overnight gear and food. Tools will be supplied. For those staying over, we do a combination of shared and individual food.

Additional Info:

The Hike In: In addition to bringing in any personal gear for the day or overnight, your help will be needed to carry in and out shovels, bars and buckets. We will hike in from the Trail head on Woodland Valley Road. It’s a strenuous 3.5 mile hike to the lean-to. Follow the Wittenberg Cornell Slide (Red) Trail  2.6mi. Take the Terrace Lean-to (Yellow) Trail,  0.9mi to the Lean-to. This trail can be like a streambed at times.

Water:
In spite of the lean to not having a known reliable water source, we previously located a few seasonal water sources close by. Water can also be obtained on the hike in. The WCS Trail crosses many small water courses.

Minors:
Volunteers under the age of 18 will need to fill out a Guardian Consent Form, with a parent or guardian present during the worktrip.

Cell Service:
There is no cell service at the trailhead. Cell service is spotty near the trail junction on the mountain. The last cell service from the south is in Boiceville. Thank you again for your desire to help out. We're looking forward to seeing you at the shelter!

Note to volunteers: Please send Eric a follow up email so he knows who plans to stay over. Be sure to include cell phone numbers and where you are coming from, for carpooling purposes. This will allow Eric to notify participants with more specifics and any updates, such as weather cancellations.
